A/B testing is treated as common sense in tech culture. Try two versions, see which performs better, ship the winner. The method is clean, and it can be genuinely enlightening.

You can feel the backlash in small signals. People celebrate apps that “just work.” They seek out tools with stable interfaces. They buy hardware that promises longevity. They romanticize offline modes, local storage, and products that do not require accounts.

This is not nostalgia for old technology. It is a demand for a different relationship with tools. A relationship where competence is rewarded rather than invalidated, where learning sticks, where your attention does not have to be renegotiated every week.

There is also a deeper psychological appeal. A local app, in the older sense, implied a boundary. The software lived on your device. It might update, but it did not morph hourly. It belonged to a place you could point to, and therefore it felt more like something you could understand.

Understanding is underrated. People tolerate enormous complexity if they can build a mental model that holds. The modern control-plane model often denies them that.

The Hidden Cost to Work, Creativity, and Memory

The most expensive consequence of unstable software is not annoyance. It is the erosion of uninterrupted thought.

Work that requires depth, writing, design, analysis, coding, planning, depends on long spans of unbroken attention. A small disruption is not small if it breaks the thread. When the environment shifts frequently, the brain spends more effort reorienting and less effort producing.

This is why even minor interface changes can provoke disproportionate anger. The user is not upset because a button moved. The user is upset because a fragile and valuable mental state was interrupted, again, by a decision they did not consent to.

There is a path out of this, and it is not a plea for companies to stop improving their products. Improvement is not the enemy. Unannounced instability is.

Software can evolve while preserving trust if it treats user learning as sacred. That means committing to consistent interaction patterns, resisting the urge to redesign for novelty, and treating interface changes as public promises with careful migration paths.

It also means being honest about remote control. If parts of the experience can change without an update, users should know, and they should have ways to opt out of experimental volatility. Not buried toggles, not labyrinthine settings, but clear agency.

Most of all, it requires a shift in what success means. A product that helps people accomplish something and then get on with their lives should not be punished by the business model. That is a design problem, but it is also an ethics problem.

The tools we use shape our sense of time. When a tool becomes a moving target, time starts to feel less like something we spend and more like something taken in small, deniable amounts. The tragedy is that this theft is rarely dramatic. It is quiet, efficient, and widely accepted.

And yet the desire for stable tools keeps reappearing, because human beings do not only want new features. They want environments they can trust, so their minds can do what minds are built to do, which is to build, to remember, and to go deep without looking over their shoulder.
